Leather Products Inspection

Leather and Leather Products

Leather is a material loved by many for its flexibility and durability. It is made from tanning animal skins or hides. Many different animals are used to make leather. Leather has four basic grains or qualities; those are full-grain leather, top-grain leather, genuine leather, and corrected-grain leather. Most commonly used hides are from cow, buffalo and sheep skins, which have to be checked and certified during our inspection process.

As in all natural products there is lack of uniformity in hides from same animal species and characteristics  vary a lot depending on the area where the animal came from. This holds true for each type of animal from which the leather has been derived. Hence, hide and semi tanned leather classification is subject to a lot of subjective methods especially at the bulk stage.  Most universally accepted laboratory testing standards and procedures are those which have been approved by the International Union of Leather Chemists Societies, also adapted and approved by Pakistan Standards & Quality Control Authority.

Asian has conducted Pre Shipment Inspections for export consignments for international clients in different parts of the world.

While end use is the primary determinant of finished leather inspection requirements, the following checks are always required on random sampling basis:

  • Color uniformity within consignment
  • Thickness of the product, within a tolerance range
  • Weight per sq. foot/meter
  • Tensile Strength
  • Other field tests specified by buyer.

Leather products like belts, shoes, bags and apparel are checked in accordance to buyer specifications and design requirements.
